The powerful 1170cc air/oil-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine is now smoother and smoother. The engine incorporates two camshafts, four radially-arranged valves per cylinder, and a central counterbalance shaft. The engine can produce the max power of 109 bhp at 7,250 rpm and torque of 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm.

Its compression ratio is 12.0:1. Fed by an 18-litre fuel tank, BMW R nineT gives a mileage of 22 km/l.
